Have you ever watched two elementary children begin with one piece of work… and end up completely absorbed in a conversation?

Children in the second plane have a strong need to communicate. They want to exchange ideas, ask questions, debate, laugh, explain, persuade, and discover what other people think. In a Montessori environment, this happens naturally all the time. Children may begin working together on a follow-up in mathematics, history, language, or geometry and suddenly find themselves deep in conversation about their dogs, cats, favourite games, or something completely unrelated — sometimes so deep that they forget what they were originally working on. 

This is not accidental.

The human tendencies to communicate, reason, question, and connect with others are part of our human nature. We all carry them. But in the elementary years, the child’s social world expands enormously, and conversation becomes one of the ways children construct themselves within the group.

Our goal as guides it to turn this natural tendency into a purposeful work choice.

Rooted in Montessori Grace and Courtesy and the Building of a Self-Regulating Community

For younger children, Grace and Courtesy is often experienced through concrete demonstrations of how to move, greet, interrupt, wait, carry, offer help, or care for the environment. In the elementary years, however, demonstration is no longer enough on its own. Grace and Courtesy in the second plane moves beyond simply showing children how to behave in a particular social situation. Children want to understand why social behaviours matter, what is fair, how relationships work, what to do when people disagree, and how their words affect others. They need opportunities to explore relationships, choices, different perspectives, and the consequences of words and actions — not through preaching, but through a carefully prepared environment that allows them to practise these social skills in real and meaningful ways.

This is where TALK comes in. The material serves as an invitation to practise the art of meaningful conversation. As children think, ask, listen, and come to know one another more deeply, they actively develop self-awareness, empathy, self-regulation, social intelligence, respect for boundaries, and openness to different points of view.
