Do you remember the First Great Story, when we imagined the beginning of everything?

We did some experiments and observed that tiny particles can come together. Some particles seemed to be attracted to each other, almost as if an invisible force were pulling them close. And when particles came together in different ways, they formed different substances.

Some became solids.
Some became liquids.
Some became gases.

We discovered that everything in the universe follows laws. Not your orders. Not my orders. But laws that were given from the very beginning. โœจ๐ŸŒŒ

In that Great Story, we also discovered a great cosmic dance.

The Earth has been dancing since it was born. It spins around itself, turning and turning, and you do not even feel dizzy from this dance! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ซ The Earth also dances around the Sun. ๐ŸŒž And other planets part of our Solar System dance around the Sun. We will talk about them in another story. Today, I want you to notice another dancing body in this cosmic dance: the Moon. The Moon dances around the Earth, month after month, quietly circling us. ๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ

So we have the Sun, the Earth, and the Moon, all moving, turning, circling, and following the laws of the universe. ๐Ÿ’ซ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ๐ŸŒ™And sometimes, in this cosmic dance, something amazing happens.

The Moon comes between the Sun and the Earth and cast a shadow of the sun covering it completely. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ

Today, we know much more than people knew long ago. Scientists have studied the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, and other celestial bodies. They have measured distances, calculated sizes, studied movement, and noticed patterns again and again. ๐Ÿ”ญ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒ

We know the Sun is very, very, very far away. If you could drive a very fast car all the way to the Sun, it would take more than one hundred years to arrive! You would be very, very old by the time you got there. ๐Ÿš—๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ‘ต But the Moon is much closer. People have traveled to the Moon in about three days. Three days! That is still a huge journey, but compared with the Sun, the Moon is our nearby neighbor. ๐Ÿš€๐ŸŒ™

We also know that the Sun is enormous. More than one million Earths could fit inside the Sun. Imagine the million cube and the tiny unit cube. That is how enormous the Sun is compared with Earth. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŸจ

And the Moon? The Moon is even smaller than Earth. So here is a great mystery... If the Sun is so enormous, and the Moon is so much smaller, how can the Moon cover the Sun in the sky?

Letโ€™s try something. Close one eye. Look at something round in the distance. Maybe my head, or a clock on the wall. Let that be the Sun. ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒž

Now hold up your thumb close to your open eye. Your thumb will be the Moon. Your eye will be the Earth. ๐Ÿ‘๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ Move your thumb between your eye and the faraway object. What happens? Your thumb can cover it!

But wait. Is your thumb really bigger than my head? Is your thumb bigger than the clock? Is your thumb bigger than the whole shelf? No! Your thumb only looks big enough to cover those things because it is close to your eye. The faraway object looks smaller because it is farther away. Now slowly move your thumb away from your eye. What happens? It looks smaller and smaller.

That is a little like the Moon and the Sun. The Moon is not bigger than the Sun. Not even close! But because the Moon is much closer to Earth, it can sometimes look just big enough to cover the Sunโ€™s bright face. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ‘ And when the Moon stands in just the right place between the Sun and Earth, it casts a shadow. That shadow can rush across Earth and give people chills and thrills. ๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ˜ฎ

But people long ago did not know all of this.

They did not know how large the Sun was.
They did not know how far away the Sun was.
They did not know how far away the Moon was.
They did not know that the Moon was casting a shadow.

They only knew that there was a glowing light in the night sky, and another great glowing light in the day sky. One changed shape in the darkness. The other gave warmth and light. ๐ŸŒ™๐ŸŒž

Long before telescopes ๐Ÿ”ญ, cameras ๐Ÿ“ท, satellites ๐Ÿ›ฐ๏ธ, or eclipse glasses ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ, human beings watched the sky with only their eyes, their memory, their imagination, and their questions.

They watched the Sun rise. ๐ŸŒ…They watched the Moon change shape. ๐ŸŒ™ They watched the stars return night after night. โœจ

The sky was useful, beautiful, and mysterious. It was like a great outdoor clock, calendar, map, and storybook all at once. It helped people notice when warm days were coming, when cold days might return, when animals might move, when plants might grow, when it was time to travel, and later, when it was time to plant seeds or harvest crops. ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ๐Ÿ‚๐ŸฆŒ๐ŸŒฑ

Thousands of years ago, people noticed that something strange could happen to the Sun in the middle of a sunny day. The Sunโ€™s warmth faded. The bright light of its rays vanished behind something that seemed to be taking big bites from it, until at last the Sun was covered completely. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ‘ It was not a cloud. There were no dark clouds in the sky.

It was something else, standing right in front of the Sun, casting a shadow over the Earth, and making people wonder, worry, and whisper. ๐Ÿ‘€

Without modern science, people did not yet know about the Moonโ€™s shadow. They were not able to imagine it the way we can with our thumbs. But they could observe. ๐Ÿ‘€ They could remember. ๐Ÿง  They could tell stories. ๐Ÿ—ฃ๏ธ

Oh, what stories they told! Buckle up and imagine, and try not to laugh. ๐Ÿ‘ต๐Ÿ‘งโœจ

More than 4,000 years ago, in ancient China, people recorded sun dissapearing in the middle of the day. Some people told of a great dragon trying to eat the Sun. When the Sun darkened, they made loud noises, beat drums, and tried to scare the dragon away. ๐Ÿ‰๐Ÿฅ

In old Norse stories from northern Europe, people told of two great wolves chasing the lights of the sky. One wolf, chased the Sun, and the other wolf, chased the Moon. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿบ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿบ When the wolf caught the Sun, this shadow of the sun in the middle of the day happened. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿบ

Tribal people living in West Africa, thought that the Sun and Moon were fighting. So people felt responsible and tried to stop their own quarrels and make peace, hoping the Sun and Moon would make peace too. โ˜€๏ธ๐ŸŒ™๐Ÿค

Some of the tribal people of North America, one name for the sun's dissapearing during the day meant something like โ€œthe Sun got bit by a bear.โ€ ๐Ÿป๐ŸŒž In the story, the Bear and the Sun argued about who should move along the Milky Way, and perhaps the bear started biting the Sun and caused this shadow.

In parts of South America, some people imagined not a bears but a powerful puma playing with the Sun. ๐Ÿ†๐ŸŒž They made noise to frighten the creature away and help the Sun return.

In another place around 3,000 years ago, in ancient Mesopotamia, the sky-watchers wrote on clay tablets that the darkening of the Sun could be a serious warning from the heavens for the king. That's why they replaced with fake king to protect the real one during such events. ๐Ÿ‘‘ ๐Ÿ“œ

Later, around 2,500 years ago, some Greek thinkers began looking for natural explanations. One philosopher, explained that this strange darkening happened when the Moon came between the Earth and the Sun and cast its shadow on Earth. ๐ŸŒž๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ

This was a very different kind of explanation.

No dragon. ๐Ÿ‰
No wolf. ๐Ÿบ
No bear. ๐Ÿป
No angry message from the sky. ๐ŸŒŒ

Just the Sun, the Moon, the Earth, movement, light, and shadow.

Over many centuries, people learned more about the world around. As they traveled, traded, shared ideas, and looked carefully at the sky, they began to compare what they noticed. They measured. They counted. They calculated. They predicted. ๐Ÿ“œ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿ“โœจ

Led by curiosity and the deep human desire to discover more, people cooperated and invented tools to help their eyes see farther. A little over 400 years ago, Galileo used a telescope to study the sky. ๐Ÿ”ญ๐ŸŒ™โœจ The telescope helped people look more closely at the Moon, the planets, and the heavens. ๐Ÿ‘€๐Ÿง ๐Ÿ’ญ They studied and named each of the mysterious events, and one of them was this marvellous cosmic dance causing the Sun to disappear in a shadow during the day.

When this happens, we call it a solar eclipse. But now we know: the Sun is still there. No wolf or dragon is eating it. The Moon is casting its shadow. ๐ŸŒ‘๐ŸŒ

The name solar comes from sol, meaning Sun. ๐ŸŒž Letโ€™s clap it: ๐Ÿ‘ so-lar ๐Ÿ‘ and eclipse means to disappear. Letโ€™s clap it: ๐Ÿ‘ e-clipse ๐Ÿ‘ So a solar eclipse is when the Sun seems to disappear for a short time.

And when the Moon covers the Sun completely, something wonderful can appear around the dark Moon: a pale, glowing crown of light. This is called the corona. ๐Ÿ‘‘โœจ Corona means crown. It is like an invisible crown that the Sun wears every day, but usually the Sun is so bright that our eyes cannot see it. During a total solar eclipse, when the Moon covers the Sunโ€™s bright face, the glowing crown can finally appear. ๐ŸŒ‘๐Ÿ‘‘๐ŸŒž

But there is something very important to remember. The Sun is powerful. Its light gives warmth and life, but looking directly at the bright Sun can hurt our eyes forever. ๐Ÿ‘€๐ŸŒž That is why people invented special ways to observe the Sun safely. Today, we use special eclipse glasses. Eclipse glasses are not walking-around glasses! ๐Ÿ•ถ๏ธ๐Ÿšถโ€โ™€๏ธ When you put them on, almost everything becomes dark. You might not see a chair, a stone, a tree, or even a friend in your path. Eclipse glasses are made for one special job: to look safely at the Sun. First stand still, then put them on, then look up, and when you are finished looking, take them off before moving again. ๐ŸŒž๐Ÿ‘€โœจ

Even today, when we understand what is happening, a solar eclipse make people silent with wonder and amazement. Because this solar eclipse is simply a part of the Great Cosmic Dance. ๐Ÿ˜ฎโœจ
